Chasing colors in the ‘Capture the Colour’ contest #CTC13

Yellow: Mesa Arch at Sunrise

The sunrise photo I took of Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park at the beginning of this month is my “yellow” entry in the Capture the Colour contest.

The concept behind the contest is for bloggers to post five pictures with each one representing a different color — red, blue, green, yellow and white.    I hadn’t planned on entering the contest because, well frankly, I’ve seen the competition and it’s just a little intimidating. There are some stunning entries in the contest, which is sponsored by Travel Supermarket and is in its second year.

But thanks to a friendly nudge from Satu of http://petzooshop.com/, I’ve decided to put together an entry, not because I think I can win but because, sometimes, it’s just fun to play along.

Red: On the Pont Alexandre III, Paris

This picture was taken shortly after we finished a walking tour that was interrupted by a downpour. My wife was standing on the north end of the Pont Alexandre III, looking toward Place des Invalides.

Blue: The Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

The Lincoln Memorial is one of my favorite sunset spots in the city. It sits at the west end of the National Mall where the sun sets directly behind it. At dusk when the lights come on, it completely transforms.

Green: Color Run 5K

The Color Run 5k is one of those “fun” runs where the running is secondary. The primary objective is to get yourself covered from head to toe in colored corn starch. I was wandering around the post-race pit when I saw this kid standing on top of a barrier with his arms up in a victory pose.

White: Election Night Celebration

When President Obama won re-election in 2012, I headed down to the White House to take pictures of revelers. That’s where I saw this guy holding a light bulb.

As part of the contest, which ends Oct. 9, I’m supposed to nominate five other bloggers I’d like to see enter the contest. Here they are:

Jess from ice cream and permafrost

Shanna from There and Back Again

Simone Anne from We are Adventure.us

Mike from Nomadic Texan

Melissa from travel, je t’aime

I’m totally in on this! Yay, how fun. :)

    • Joe Newman

      Looking forward to your entries!

  • Janice

I’ve been waiting to see your pics. They’re awesome!

    • Joe Newman

Thanks! I’ve only processed a handful. But the ones I have done are on my flickr.

Great shots! I think my fave is of the boy with the green. What a great moment to have captured. The Paris red umbrella shot is a close second, though. This challenge totally intimidates me, too, but I’ll give it a shot. It’s gonna take me forever to choose pictures.

Thanks! That was a fun event to shoot. But if you ever do one, I’d recommend making sure your camera is weather-sealed because that corn starch covers everything.

I love your yellow and green. Good luck!

  • Joe Newman

Thanks, Corinne. I checked out your post and love your blue guy!

Nice! Definitely better than my entry :p May I know what camera you used? (newbie here) :p

    • Joe Newman

Thanks, Perky! But what are you talking about? Your pictures are great! Love your green and blue (my wife and I are going to Bohol next summer). As far as my camera, for red and white, I used a Nikon D7000. For yellow, blue and green, I used an Olympus E-M5.

Cool shots! I really like the red one, it looks very classy. And I also love the look of the boy on your green shot. Very nicely done! Good luck :)

    • Joe Newman

Thank you. Good luck to you, too!

I LOVE that Mesa Arch at sunrise, that’s definitely a place I would love to visit and photograph myself one day. And the green, that’s a winner. And my kind of race too…

    • Joe Newman

Thanks, Satu! And thanks for getting me to enter. I’m digging looking at everyone’s entries and how they interpret color.
